The Mayor of London Boris Johnson has invited Londoners to comment on the future of the Congestion Charge Western Extension.
Chances are if you’re a customer of Charles Hurst South Kensington or you are considering a Land Rover from us here, you will live or work near to or within the current charging zone.
Currently, it costs £8 a day (Monday to Friday, 7.00am to 6.00pm but does not operate on weekends or public holidays, or between 25 December and 1 January inclusive) to drive within the Western Extension of the Congestion Charge zone, which came into force in February 2007. However, residents both within the zone and some around the boundary can apply for a 90% discount.
Transport for London (TfL), on behalf of the Mayor, is seeking Londoners' views on the future of the Western Extension of the Congestion Charging Scheme. There are three possible options for the Western Extension for consideration:-
- Keep the Western Extension as it is
- Remove the Western Extension - There would no longer be a charge to drive within the Western Extension; residents there would no longer receive a discount on travel in the original charging zone
- Change the Western Extension – Change the way the scheme operates by introducing account based payment, by introducing a charge free period in the middle of the day in the Western Extension, or by increasing the residents' discount to 100%
The original central London Congestion Charging zone will continue to operate in its current form.
The very earliest that the Western Extension could be removed is at the end of 2009. Some changes to the scheme would require longer implementation timescales.
