Helping Sustain the Planet – CO2 Offset Programme
Land Rover drivers automatically contribute to creating a sustainable
world through the manufacturer’s ‘CO2 Offset’ package designed to
offset CO2 emissions reflecting Land Rover’s commitment to a
sustainable future.
The world's largest consumer CO2 offset programme, also balances all
manufacturing emissions and the first 45,000 miles of customer use
equivalent to average three years of driving, in the UK and other
European markets.
Launched in 2006, the scheme ensures that the CO2 emissions of all
new Land Rover vehicles sold in the UK are offset for the first 45,000
miles of use. Managed by Climate Care, its New Vehicle Offset Programme
invests in a specific range of Land Rover-funded alternative energy
projects around the world including: Hydropower Tajikistan and Wind
energy in China. The new vehicle programme is now being expanded to
customers in other countries initially including Norway, Sweden and
Belgium.
As part of its integrated CO2 approach , the Land Rover G4 Challenge
and the Land Rover sales and service facilities and Experience Centres
in the UK, all have their CO2 emissions offset by Climate Care.
CO2 offsetting works by funding (investment) in projects that avoid
or reduce CO2 emissions ensuring that the amount saved balances the
original emissions. The Land Rover CO2 Offset Programme invests in 3
key offset project types:
Renewable energy: Replacing non renewable fossil fuels with renewable energy sources such as solar and wind.
Technology change: Promoting the use of new technologies that avoid or reduce CO2 emissions.
Energy efficiency: Improving efficiency in energy consumption for communities and industry alike.
The Land Rover offset programme has now been extended to include
pre-2007 model year cars, whereby customers have the option to offset
either 15,000 miles or 45,000 miles, which equates to approximately one or three years’ use respectively.
Using an online calculator developed for Land Rover customers, an
offset figure is generated based on fuel type, number of cylinders,
transmission type and the mileage to be offset. To do this Land Rover
customers can visit www.climatecare.org.uk/landrover.
Earlier this year Land Rover launched its Our Planet communications
campaign which sets out the progress the company has made in improving
its environmental performance and a commitment to maintain the momentum
with technical innovation alongside its offset programme. Our Planet
also highlights Land Rover's global conservation and humanitarian
projects.
Together with Jaguar, Land Rover is spending £700m on technology specifically aimed at reducing CO2.
Land Rover’s ultimate goal is CO2 neutrality with investments being
made in renewable energy projects such as wind and hydro, technology
change and energy efficiency.
